Hammes founded the Racine Wastemaster Company in Racine, Wisconsin. His first patented product was the Hydra-Transformer, which used a small amount of water to grind food waste into tiny particles and flush it away.
This innovation revolutionized the way people disposed of food scraps in the home. No longer did people need to collect food waste in a pail and carry it outside to an incinerator or compost pile. With the Hydra-Transformer, food scraps could be ground up and washed down the drain right at the kitchen sink.
